Finding the right words when someone has died is one of the harder things we are asked to do. A message written for funeral flowers or a sympathy card does not need to be long, poetic or perfectly phrased. It needs to feel sincere, reflect your relationship and let the family know they are not alone.
This guide offers example messages for different situations, from a short inscription on a ribbon to a longer note in a card, along with some phrases that are best avoided.
Why the message matters
The flowers themselves carry much of the sentiment. But the card or ribbon message is often what a family reads again quietly, days after the service has passed. A few honest words — a name, a memory, a simple acknowledgement of loss — can offer genuine comfort when it is needed most.
There is no single correct way to express sympathy. What matters is that your message sounds like you, respects the gravity of the occasion and gives the recipient something warm to hold on to.

Phrases to avoid
Being authentic is always the best approach. Avoid anything that might inadvertently minimise the loss or place pressure on the person grieving. Common phrases to leave out include:
- Everything happens for a reason.
- You'll be reunited with them again someday.
- They had a good innings.
- I understand how you're feeling.
- They lived a full life.
- You won't always feel this way.
If you are struggling to find the right words, keep your message brief and honest. A simple "Thinking of you with love" is always more comforting than a phrase that tries too hard.
